▍How to survive a fire-Evacuation

In the event of a fire remain calm, follow the correct evacuation steps to ensure you remain safe

•Escape downwards:Thick smoke rises rapidly so head for the first floor rather than one of the higher floors in the building.

•Touch the door handle to test the temperature:Before opening a door first touch the door handle to test the temperature and open it slightly to see whether there is any smoke. If the handle is hot or there is smoke do not open the door as that indicates the temperature on the other side of the door is high. Choose another evacuation route.

•Take the stairs:First check there is no smoke in the stairwell and take the stairs down to the ground floor. The best choice is emergency stairways with fire doors.

•Lateral escape:If smoke is spreading in the stairwell making it impossible to continue evacuating downwards or upwards, move laterally and look for another exit, making sure to close all doors to prevent the fire and smoke spreading as quickly.

•Ensure you have two evacuation routes:Always have two planned evacuation routes. If the main route is blocked switch to your backup plan or search for a safe space away from the origin point of the fire and call 119 for assistance, when you should inform the rescue services of your exact location and wait to be rescued by firefighters.
